Music video by Janet Jackson performing Control. Control is the third studio album by American recording artist Janet Jackson, released on February 4, 1986, by A&M Records. Her collaborations with the songwriters and record producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis resulted in an unconventional sound: a fusion of rhythm and blues, rap vocals, funk, disco and synthesized percussion that established Jackson, Jam and Lewis as the leading innovators of contemporary R&B. The album became Jackson's commercial breakthrough and enabled her to transition into the. Title: Janet Jackson: Control Video 1986. Toward the end of last week's post, I called the Time arguably the most highly-regarded of Princes various side projects. So allow me to start this post with another superlative: if the Time was the most highly-regarded of the purple protegés, then their girl group sister project, Vanity 6, was perhaps the most underrated and misunderstood. Janet Jackson. Although Janet Jackson had released two records in the early '80s, they were quickly forgotten, and notably shaped by her father's considerable influence. Janet's landmark third album, 1986's Control, changed all that. On the opening title track, Jackson, with passion and grace, declares her independence, moving out of the gargantuan shadow of her brother Michael and on to the business of making her own classic pop album. The true genius of Control lies in the marriage of her extremely self-assured vocals with the emphatic beats of R&B production wizards Jimmy Jam and T. Pop 1986. Leaving the family nest to connect with former Prince protégés Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Jackson created a subtle concept album about feminine independence-from the take-no-prisoners electro-funk of Nasty to the shimmering delicacy of Let's Wait Awhile. The mixture of vibrant, melodic pop and dance floor-ready R&B especially shines on the syncopated th. The album is regarded as one of the most influential albums in the history of rhythm and blues and the first album to bridge the gap between pop, R&B, and rap music. MTV's Meaghan Garvey asserted its hard to overstate the significance of Control, whether in terms of the pop landscape, the evolution of the music video as a vessel for promotion and expression, or Top 40 feminist anthems. Control made Janet the 1st female artist to have 6 top 20 hits from one album - Won 6 Billboard awards - 1 Grammys - 2 American Music Awards. In total Control has sold over 14 million copies worldwide. Related videos. Control is the third studio album by American recording artist Janet Jackson, released on February 4, 1986 by A&M. Emerging from the shadows of the most famous family in showbusiness to become a superstar in her own right, Janet Jackson was one of the biggest female pop icons of the 80s and 90s, scoring huge international hits with songs such as What Have You Done For Me Lately and Nasty. This film examines Janet's phenomenal career, from her early success as a teenage actress in hit US sitcom Diff'rent Strokes to multi award-winning pop star rivalling her brother's success with ten number one singles on the American Billboard charts and worldwide album sales of over 65 million

“When I finally make up my mind that I want to do something, it’s never been hard for me to do.”

--Janet Jackson

File

We’re sorry, Miss Jackson. For nearly two decades, Janet Damita Jo Jackson was one of the world’s most reliable hitmakers, but her reign came to a complete halt after the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show and its infamous “wardrobe malfunction.” After a stunning career spent deliberately pushing boundaries, somebody else took it a step too far and she suffered the consequences.

However, her legacy of pop masterpieces and powerful feminism was never forgotten. She kept living her life, putting out terrific albums, and never relinquishing control. Janet may have been less visible for a while there, but she never truly went away - and now that she’s been nominated to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the third time, we’re going to do whatever we can to make sure she gets in, including making sure all our listeners know how excellent Control is. We hope you enjoy this as much as we do.

Miscellany

  • We talked about the murder of Janet Jackson’s career after that pivotal Super Bowl, but at the time of recording we hadn’t yet heard who the killer was. Turns out it was Les Moonves, former CEO of CBS Corp., who allegedly spent quite a lot of his time harassing, assaulting, and otherwise mistreating women.

  • Speaking of the Super Bowl, it’s worth noting that Janet has never been invited to perform at halftime again, but Justin Timberlake, whose career suffered no visible damage after he exposed a woman’s breast on live television, was at Super Bowl LII in 2018. Amanda couldn’t help noticing that his show included several women who were evidently only there as props for him to grope.

  • The two songs in front of “Nasty” on the Billboard charts were “Sledgehammer” by Peter Gabriel and “Invisible Touch” by Genesis. There was apparently no defeating the Genesis juggernaut that week.

  • Mr. Heckles (and the diner owner in the video) was played by Larry Hankin, a wonderful character actor with quite an extensive resume. He’ll always be Mr. Heckles to us, though.

  • Amanda made the stupidest remark of this entire podcast to date when she said that “You Can Be Mine” doesn’t have enough bass. Turns out all you need is headphones and there is a ROCKIN bass line in there. She is very embarrassed.
